Sergei Sobyanin met with the finalists of the "Moscow Masters 2026" competition in the professions of nurse, emergency medical technician, and midwife. The nine winners and runners-up received keys to Moskvich cars as awards.

"We're doing a lot for healthcare. We're renovating and building new clinics, outpatient clinics, and implementing artificial intelligence, but no innovation can replace your warmth, your hearts, and your desire to help and assist patients. You certainly do this at a high level. I believe Moscow's nursing team is the best in the world," Sergei Sobyanin addressed the finalists of the "Moscow Masters 2026" competition.

The meeting was timed to coincide with International Nurses Day, which was celebrated the day before, on May 12.

Moscow Masters Competition

The Moscow Masters city competition has been held since 1998. From the very beginning, the profession of nurse was included. In 2006, paramedic was added to the list of competitive specialties. In 2026, midwives first competed in the capital's main professional competition.

The competition enhances the prestige of healthcare professionals. Participation provides an opportunity for the most competent, proactive, and committed employees to demonstrate their skills.

This year, as part of the qualifying rounds, competitive trials were held at the Moscow Department of Healthcare's Personnel Center. They included computerized testing and practical assignments, including demonstrations of professional skills, clinical reasoning, and the ability to handle complex, emergency situations (using modern simulation equipment).

A record number of healthcare professionals—1,024—participated in the testing, including 650 nurses, 30 paramedics, and 344 midwives, previously selected from medical organizations. The contestants with the highest scores advanced to the next, practical stage. Based on the expert evaluation, 33 specialists from 24 medical organizations made it to the finals.

The final round took place on May 12 at Moscow City Oncology Hospital No. 62 in Skolkovo. Finalists competed in an interactive format, answering questions on specialized subjects and completing practical tasks. The challenges covered key topics, from clinical situations and care algorithms to the fundamentals of anatomy, pharmacology, and the history of medicine.

Special attention was paid to issues related to modern treatment approaches and the practical aspects of specialists' work. This allowed us to assess the participants' ability to act in non-standard situations, their stress tolerance, and their decision-making speed.

They are highly skilled in operating high-tech equipment. The ambulance is equipped with expert-grade ventilators and ultrasound machines, a defibrillator-monitor that transmits patient data online to the critical care center, and other equipment.

Midwives Midwives are key professionals who support women during and immediately after labor. They ensure the physical and emotional comfort of the woman in labor. Midwives value not only medical competence but also psychological support. Their effective work is built on a friendly, calm demeanor, and the ability to quickly respond to changes in the woman's condition.

Personnel training and advanced training

Four colleges under the Moscow Government train sought-after specialists with secondary vocational education for the capital's healthcare system. These are Medical Colleges No. 1, 2, and 7, and the St. Demetrius College of Nursing.

A total of 14.6 thousand people are studying at medical colleges, including about 10.9 thousand in the nursing specialty.

In 2025, approximately 3,900 people were admitted to state-funded places in healthcare specialties, including over 3,000 in nursing. The planned enrollment for state-funded places in 2026 is 3,630.

In Moscow, free professional development programs, specialized training sessions, and master classes are available for nurses, paramedics, and midwives. Training is provided by the Personnel Center of the Moscow Department of Health, medical colleges, and medical organizations across the city. In 2025 and 2026, 31,000 people will participate in the Personnel Center's professional development programs and training sessions annually.

The city provides all healthcare workers, including nurses, paramedics, and midwives, with modern, comfortable, and high-quality clothing and footwear. Specialists receive their uniforms at a dedicated equipment center.

The statuses of "Moscow nurse" and "Moscow medical brother"

Since 2021, the titles of "Moscow Nurse" and "Moscow Medical Brother" have been awarded to mid-level medical professionals who have proven that their experience and level of professional qualifications meet high standards.

To obtain the status, you must pass assessment procedures. These include a theoretical exam (computer-based testing), a practical exam (skills assessment on simulators, training equipment, or mannequins), and a professional interview.

The assignment of this status is confirmed by a certificate and a badge of distinction. The certificate is valid for five years.

Medical workers with the status of "Moscow nurse" and "Moscow medical brother" receive a monthly payment of 7,500 rubles.

Currently, 781 nurses and nurses have active status, including 456 specialists in nursing, 154 specialists in pediatric nursing, 121 specialists in anesthesiology and resuscitation, and 50 specialists in operating room medicine.
